Wizkid’s introduction to fame came with his first official single “Holla At Your Boy” released in 2011. We saw his style was heavily influenced by the skater aesthetic popularized at the time by mainstream hip-hop artists such as Lil Wayne. This style featured snap backs, G-shocks, Supra high tops, flannel shirts, graphic tees, skinny jeans and such.
As he started to grow, he started embodying the “New Fela” identity he was being tagged with, and it reflected in his style, as he began incorporating African inspired style and fabrics into his looks. This was well seen in 2014, with the release of his hit single, Jaiye Jaiye.
By 2016, Wizkid had mastered the art of dressing up super stylish, flaunting high end brands and being comfortable all in one look. This came not as a surprise because this was the same year his international recognition grew, collaborating with artists from Drake, DJ Snake, to Tinie Tempah.
While maintaining his personal style, Wizkid has incorporated scarfs, beanie hats, berets, athleisure, more colours and a lot of Gucci in his looks.
In 2017, we saw him adorn the beret a lot, as seen in the music video of a feature track with Tiwa Savage titled Ma Lo.
In the same year, his love for Gucci was noticed further, when he adorned a Gucci crystal embroidered sweater, a bi-stretch stripe Gucci pants and the Rhyton Gucci logo sneakers. He was said to be paying homage to musical legend Micheal Jackson as the sweater was a lookalike to one worn by the legend in the music video for his song Rock With You in 1979.
In 2018, Wiz teamed up with Moschino for a partnership with Ciroc. The partnership which was revealed by the luxury house’s creative director, Jeremy Scott, was set to coincide with Milan Fashion Week.
Later that same year, Wizkid had a musical and fashion moment when he sold out the Royal Albert Hall, UK for his show. He wore a JW Anderson bomber vest and Fear of God pants for his performance.
In 2019, Wiz further made his stamp in fashion as he walked the runway alongside supermodel Naomi Campbell for Dolce and Gabbana for the Milan fashion week, becoming the first African artist to walk at one of the famed house’s shows.
Since then his style has only become more refined and stylish. What do you think about his style evolution over the years? And where has it influenced your style?
