Just days before the doors open on June 10, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago has given us a look inside Virgil Abloh’s music acclaimed art exhibition titled “Figures of Speech’. The 20-year survey explores pivotal moments of Abloh’s eclectic practice with signature collections, video documentation of his landmark shows, music highlights alongside a spotlight on his furniture, design and graphic works.
The exhibition is divided into seven parts: “Early Work,”, “fashion,” “Music,” “Intermezzo,” “Black Gaze,” “Design,” and “The End” with each segment showcasing stages of his career from Pyrex Vision, to his work with Louis Vuitton, his creative direction for Kanye West’s DONDA firm, his practise as a DJ, his various collaborations with top labels and much more. The exhibition will also feature a pop-up store inside dubbed “Church & State” which will feature various items from Off-White and collections with major designers such as Simon Brown, Futura, Brendan Fowler, Cali Thorn DeWitt, Some Ware, and Tom Sachs, and more.
Virgil Abloh said in a press statement, “For me, ‘Figures of Speech’ is an art exhibition rooted in advertising and ‘the projected image’. Any Time an idea takes shape on a particular surface - a photo print, a screen, a billboard, or canvas -it becomes real. This exhibition demonstrates how I wrestle with the concept freed from any one medium, looking for personal and specific solutions.”
Have a look at the exhibition in the gallery above and visit MCA Chicago’s website to learn more. The exhibition will begin on June 10 and run through till September 22.
