With the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup just around the corner, Nike has called on some of the biggest female designers in the fashion industry to help redesign the iconic football kit.
These designers include Yoon Ahn of AMBUSH, Marine Serre, Christelle Kocher of KOCHÉ and Erin Magee of MadeMe, each using their signature design ethos into a reworked jersey.
Yoon Ahn offers up a unisex jersey inspired by the Happi, a traditional Japanese straight-sleeved coat. The item has been crafted from color-blocked pieces of white, black and orange and also features an AMBUSH badge on the left chest along with a Swoosh insignia on the right. On choosing the piece to be unisex Yooh shared, “I believe it is just as important for the fans, for everyone to have a universal piece to celebrate in.”
KOCHE‘s Christelle Kocher decided to turn the iconic kit into a dress colored in white and black with graphic blue and orange lines. KOCHÉ branding comes in the form of a blue crest on the left chest as well as in bold red strewn across the front of the dress. Kocher shared, “I created this dress by reconstructing the soccer jersey around the female body.”
Erin Magee of MadeMe keeps to the jersey’s classic form. With a colorway of navy and red, the top gives off a patriotic energy, and not to mention a USA team badge is spotlighted on the left chest. On the piece Magee states, “It’s meant to celebrate the incredible victorious history of the USWNT by drawing attention to the woman namesake of the iconic sportswear company itself: Nike the Goddess of Victory.”
Marine Serre goes that extra step by creating a bodysuit dressed in her signature moon print. A high-visibility green top is then worn over the bodysuit, taking that extra step in style. “The focus of my designs is always hybridity and adapting to daily life. It’s important to create a purposeful line that makes a female feel good without compromising the style,” said the French designer about the collaboration.
